Chapter 15

Unaffiliated Zone | Northern Fis'Alim | Bel’Torra Station

With KP-1301’s chassis disassembly complete, it worked through the night to repurpose the miniaturized medical devices extracted from its cargo chamber. After it had tested each of the many tiny electrodes, sensors, and modules, it proceeded with the modifications.

For the equipment to function properly on a fully-grown human, everything had to be adjusted, and there would be limits to the kinds of medicinal compounds it could produce. Still, even at fifty percent of its original functionality, it would be able to detect infections, toxins, and a host of various illnesses that no other equipment in the station could.

Len and the others awoke the next morning and wandered into the common room, where they stared at the automecha from outside the partition as it fitted Tellen with a feeding tube. A tiny pump whirred to life and pushed a thick, translucent goo through the tube and into the patient.

KP caught the Commander’s concerned expression and explained: “It’s a protein-dense formula, a similar concoction to what Aki is being fed. It’ll do a lot more to sustain him than the IV drip.”

“Thank you, Kep. How is he?” Karsh asked.

“Stable, and not quite comatose. He awoke once during the night, though he wasn’t coherent. I can only guess that he must be suffering from severe exhaustion. His body seems to be recovering, but from precisely what, I still cannot say.”

“And what about you?” Gaul asked KP, gently bouncing Aki in her arms. The child had slept in her bed the night before, a condition KP had agreed to only after thoroughly inspecting her quarters for hazards and constructing a temporary barrier around the edge of the mattress.

“Me?” the automecha asked.

“Without the chamber attached, you don’t really… look yourself,” Gaul said.

It was true. The chamber had made up the bulk of the machine’s torso. Without it, only a thin spinal column flanked by exposed cabling remained.

“The chassis served its purpose. Actually, not carrying the extra weight has made me more energy efficient. Had it still been attached last night, I doubt I could’ve accomplished all of this on a single charge,” KP said, gesturing to the hanging modules draped in tubes and wires.

Len stepped closer now, running her hand along the partition that separated her from the unconscious patient. KP-1301 had set up a spare console screen to face the wall so that the others could observe Tellen’s vitals from beyond the partition.

“You did good, KP,” she said softly, turning to nod at the machine. “We could not have done this on our own.”

“I have brought you another mouth to feed and proved to be a further drain on your power. I am glad to do all I can to assist, and I’m pleased to report that my diagnostics have revealed something of interest,” said the automecha.

Stepping over to a new object, KP lifted a hinged panel—what had once been the cargo door of his chassis. Light spilled out from the small chamber, where a cluster of suspended sensors dangled inside, hovering just above a broad, flat plane of reflective metal.
